Language Immersion Programs


Culver City Unified offers a specialized language immersion program in Spanish and Japanese.

 

Elementary (K-5) Dual Language Immersion Programs

• Students learn academic content in the target language (Spanish or Japanese).

• Students gain communicative proficiency in both English and the target language.

• English-speaking students and native-speakers of the target language are integrated in the classroom, promoting cross-cultural and linguistic cooperation and learning.

 

Spanish

• In kindergarten 90% of the instruction is conducted in Spanish and 10% in English. By 5th grade, 50% of the instruction is in Spanish and 50% in English.

• In kindergarten 70% of the instruction is conducted in Spanish and 30% in English. By 5th grade, 50% of the instruction is in Spanish and 50% in English.

 

Japanese

Middle School

Spanish Dual Language Program
•  Students are offered Social Studies and Spanish Language Arts in the target language.
•  Students who select the academic language elective course have the option to take 0-period P.E. if they would like to take an exploratory elective in addition to their language elective.

Japanese
• Students have the opportunity to maintain Japanese in an academic language elective course offered at the middle school.

• The 3-year course follows grade-level Language Arts standards and increases in rigor to increase student proficiency in the target language.

• Students who select the academic language elective course have the option to take 0-period P.E. if they would like to take an exploratory elective in addition to their language elective.

High School

Spanish Program
ʉۢ Two strands of Spanish are offered at the high school, a) sequential foreign language strand and b) a Nativos/ Immersion strand.
• Students who matriculate through the elementary and middle school Spanish program usually transition into the Nativos/ Immersion strand. Student placement will be determined by a placement assessment.  Students have the option to take Spanish up to AP Spanish and AP Literature.  

• Those who did not continue Spanish in middle school will be placed into the appropriate course based on a placement test.

Japanese Program

 â€¢ Students who matriculate through the elementary and middle school Japanese program have the 
option to continue Japanese and will be placed into the appropriate course based on an placement assessment. 

• Students who continue will have the option to take AP Japanese.
